The brief

Orb Rope Access were asked to inspect the outside of Scarisbrick Hall’s tower for loose stonework. Scarisbrick Hall is a listed building and country house, built in the 16th century. Today, it is used as a school and is on the Heritage at Risk Register. Any work carried out on Scarisbrick Hall requires the expertise and duty of care appropriate to a listed building.

Stonework inspection leads to other projects

To carry out the required stonework inspection, we accessed Scarisbrick Hall’s 100ft tower using rope access techniques, which minimises potential damage to the structure.

Once complete, the client was able to fully appreciate the benefits of rope access and its capacity for gaining access to spaces that cannot be reached with scaffolding or cradles. Consequently, we were asked to complete internal cleaning work which required access to hard to reach areas inside the tower. The versatility of being able to assist in the maintenance and inspection of both the interior and exterior of listed buildings gives Orb Rope Access clients the opportunity to use the services of one company for all work at height.

Following completion of the stonework inspection and internal cleaning of the tower, Orb Rope Access were asked to conduct a roof spire survey and install debris netting on two of the spires to prevent any debris from falling from the listed building.

Client testimonial

Due to the quality of our work and the satisfaction of our client, Orb Rope Access is now a regular, trusted contractor for Scarisbrick Hall. We have gone on to conduct bat surveys and remove bird waste as part of ongoing maintenance. For Scarisbrick Hall’s tall structures there will no doubt be many other projects that Orb Rope Access can assist with due to our expertise and sensitivity in working on heritage sites.

“Orb Rope Access have run several projects at Scarisbrick Hall. We have found them to be efficient, reliable and have completed their works on time and on budget. We would have no hesitation in recommending them. Well done Matt and team, keep up the good work.”

Greg Aylmer, Director, Scarisbrick Hall School
